JMS Fleets Quick Start Guide

If you are new to JMS and setting up Fleets for the first time, follow these steps to work with JMS Fleets seamlessly.

Steps:

  1. Set up Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

    Before you begin using JMS Fleets, ensure that you set up the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to allow communication between JMS Fleets and cloud services. You can set up OCI either using a Wizard or Manually. See Setting Up Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for Fleets for detailed instructions.

  2. Create a fleet

    After setting up OCI, create a fleet within your compartment. The number of fleets you can create depends on the fleet limits for your tenancy. See Create Fleet for detailed instructions.

  3. Download agent software and deploy JMS plug-in

    If the host you wish to monitor using JMS Fleets is an OCI Linux instance in the same tenancy and region as that of the fleet, configure Oracle Cloud Agent. For all other types of host, install Oracle Management Agent. See Installing Management Agent and Deploying JMS Plug-ins for detailed instructions.

  4. Perform Advanced Feature Operations

    JMS provides access to advanced features if you have Oracle Java SE Universal Subscription, a legacy Oracle Java SE Subscription, a legacy Java SE Desktop Subscription, or when running on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure service that permits access to the underlying operating system. You can perform the following advanced feature operations by Enabling Advanced Features:

    • Java Runtime Lifecycle Management: This feature allows you to install or delete Java runtimes, and distribute Deployment Rule Set (DRS) file on all managed instances in your fleet.
    • Advanced Usage Tracking: This feature allows you to monitor the usage of Java servers and Java libraries in a fleet.
    • Run JDK Flight Recorder: This feature collects diagnostic and profiling data from running Java applications. The data is recorded and uploaded to your tenancy for analysis.
    • Crypto Event Analysis: This feature helps the administrators to compare the cryptographic algorithms from the Java Security Libraries are being used, with the planned changes. It will highlight the applications that might be impacted and also provides information on the certificates that are about to expire.
    • Java Migration Analysis: This feature helps you to evaluate the effort and feasibility of migrating Java applications to newer JDK versions.
    • Performance Analysis: This feature helps you to optimize Java workload performance with JVM tuning recommendations.
  5. Monitor work requests

    Any action that you initiate will create a work request. You can monitor all work requests to know the progress and status of your action. See Work Requests for detailed instructions.
